We have come across a lot of stories about a son learning lessons from his father but today I am going to tell you a story in which a father learns a lesson from his son.

There are three Main Characters in this Story

  • Robert (Son)
  • James (Father)
  • Edward (Grand Father)

James used to work as a carpenter and was living with his father and a son in a small village. His mother passed away a long time ago. His father, Edward, was physically very weak and was not even able to walk properly. James’s behavior towards his father was very rude and he didn’t use to give him enough food due to which his father was becoming weak day by day. He had given his father a small earthen plate and even a small quantity of rice appeared to be much on it. James also used to take drinks and after taking drinks, he used to abuse his father badly.

James had a son, named Robert. He was ten years old boy. He loved his grandfather very much and never liked his father’s attitude towards his grandfather due to which he used to stay silent and sad all the time.

Rising Action

One day, Edward was eating food out of earthen plate that his son had given to him. suddenly, the plate fell down and broke into pieces, the food also fell on the floor. James was cutting woods outside, when he heard the noise he came running inside and saw the broken plate. He abused his father badly and also warned him that if he will do the same thing again in future he won’t be served food. The old man was sorry for his mistake but the words of his son wounded him badly.

James son, Robert saw this but he was afraid to speak anything and could not take any stand for his grand father because he was worried what if his father starts beating him. The only thing he could do was to comfort his grandfather.

The next day Robert took some of his father’s carpentry tools and a piece of wood. He sat at the side and started making a wooden plate out of it. His father saw him doing this and was curious to ask what he was doing.

“What are you making, Robert?” he asked.

“I am making a wooden plate!” replied Robert.

“A wooden plate! What for?” asked his father.

“I am making it for you father. When you grow old like my grandfather, you will need a plate for food. A plate made from earth mat break very easily then I may scold you severely. So, I want to give you a wooden plate. It may not break so easily.”

When James heard this from Robert, He was shocked and realized what he was doing wrong. He realized his father was very kind and nice to him when he was young but what he is giving hid father in return. He was now upset about his own behavior and promised himself that he would be a changed person from now onward.

From that day, James treated his father with great respect. He gave up drinking too. James learnt a lesson from his own son.

Lesson Learnt

“What goes around comes around” or “as you sow, so shall you reap”

Everything we say and do, determines what’s going to happen to us in the future. Whether we act honestly, dishonestly, help or hurt others, it all gets recorded and manifests as a karmic reaction either in this life or a future life.

There is no exact formula that is provided for how and when karmic reactions will appear in our lives, but one can be sure they will appear in some form or other. One may be able to get away with a crime they committed, or avoid paying taxes, but according to karma, no one gets away with anything for long.
